Gunner Hammett built one of the most remarkable middle school careers ever seen in the 800-meter event, consistently setting standards rarely achieved at such a young age. Across four consecutive years, Hammett established himself as a groundbreaking athlete whose accomplishments helped redefine expectations for middle school middle-distance runners.

Hammett became the first fifth grader to compete at New Balance Nationals and later made history again as the first — and still only — sixth grader to win the middle school division. As an eighth grader, he continued pushing boundaries by becoming the first middle school athlete to compete in the championship division, entering with the slowest qualifying seed time and still outperforming more than half of the field against elite competition.
His performances on the track were equally historic. Hammett recorded back-to-back 1:54 performances, including a personal best of 1:54.4, showcasing exceptional consistency and speed at a young age. He also became the first and only middle school athlete in history to receive invitations to the Brooks PR Invitational three consecutive years.
Among his most notable achievements, Hammett became the first and only athlete globally to break the two-minute barrier in the 800 meters at age 12 — a milestone that further separated him from his peers.
Over four consecutive years, Gunner Hammett left a lasting impact on the sport and on middle school 800-meter running. While many athletes rise and fade over time, his accomplishments created a legacy that stands as one of the most unique and historic in youth track and field.
